Spirituality or Atheism

There seems to be a renewed attention to Atheism or simple lack of religious thought of any kind. Why do you think that has been happening, and is that a good thing or a problem in our society?

I have never been a big fan of organized religons, with mane notable exceptions. The idea that most of the major religions have become a source of political manipulation and brainwashing of the masses is apalling to me, but I still cannot accept the idea that religions as a whole are evil. So many of the greatest spiritual minds throughout history have been religious figures. It would be wise to accept that religion itself can be a good thing, when it is not being used by greedy, narrow minded people to fulfill their personal agendas and power hungry needs.
Major example:
China, the largest Atheist country in the world, viciously murdering over 100 000 people and destroying the way of living of Tibetans, one of the most enlightened, peaceful and religious countries on earth.
